The Saskatchewan Registered Music Teachers' Association is dedicated
to promoting and
maintaining a high standard of musical and academic excellence
among its teachers.
Members must be 18 years of age and have lived in Saskatchewan
for at least six months.

Qualifications for Membership
Registered Music Teacher
• This is the only category of membership entitled to use the RMT designation.
• Will receive “Canadian Music Teacher” and “Opus”.
• May vote at Provincial Association meetings, and participate on the provincial board.
• Members qualifying for this category may include those with Conservatory Associateships; degrees such as Bachelor of Musical Arts, Bachelor of Music, Master of Music, or Doctorate of Music; and those accepted as members by the Provincial Association, including experienced teachers who are deemed equivalent by the provincial by-laws, who have met all criteria set out by the provincial Registered Music Teachers’ Association.
Affiliate
- The Affiliate Membership category includes experienced teachers who have not met all criteria set out for full provincial Registered Music Teacher membership.
- Not entitled to use the RMT designation.
- Will receive “Canadian Music Teacher” and “Opus”
- Entitled to vote at Provincial Association meetings, but may not be on the provincial board.
- Affiliate Members will be categorized in one of the two Affiliate Member Levels (as outlined below). The category placement depends on the requirements outstanding for full membership, and the term will be established by the Provincial Association:
Affiliate Member - Level 1: Grade 10 certificate from a recognized Conservatory
Affiliate Member - Level 2: Grade 9 certificate from a recognized Conservatory

- A registered member may use the designation “RMT”
- Belonging to a recognized professional organisation
- The inclusion of your name in the comprehensive directory
of qualified teachers.
- The inclusion of your name in the online directory at www.srmta.com
- Receipt of “OPUS”, provincial Newsletter - published
three times a year.
- Knowledge of new publications and progressie teaching trends
- Conventions and annual meetings which, besides being the communication
link between the Canadian Federation of Music Teachers’
Association and branch groups, offer a variety of study sessions,
fine workshops and social events.
- Eligibility for composition and awards to students.
- Access to the Young Artist Series – a concert tour
of the prairie Provinces which presents finalists, chosen from
representatives from the participating provinces.
- The availability of business brochures and studio business
practices packages for a nominal fee.
- Support in sustaining of province wide minimum student lesson
fees.
- Opportunity to change the public's perception of music e.g. Department of Education School Credits, GST exemption from private lessons
- Participation in the Liability Insurance Plan.
- The availability of four provincial scholarships:
LYELL GUSTIN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
For students up to 18 years of age
DOROTHY BEE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP
For further training for young teachers.

- Subscription to the Canadian Music Teachers’ Magazine
- Participation in the Liability Insurance Plan.
- Biennial conventions offering training by internationally
recognized musicians.
- Eligibility for prizes and scholarships offered to students
for performance and composition.
- Affiliation with other national music networks e.g. ANCMP, CFMTA, MTNA
- Opportunity for students to enter the Canada Music Week Musi Writing Competition.
- The opportunity to network with teachers across Canada.
BENEFITS AT THE BRANCH LEVEL
- Regular programs , lectures, recitals and demonstrations
to assist the teacher to teach effectively.
- The presentation of a series of student recitals to enable
young artists to gain experience in public performance.
- The opportunity to grow professionally along with other professionals
in your area.
- The opportunity to network with teachers in your area.
Benefits of Auxiliary Membership
- Access to our provincial newsletter, published three times
per year, communicating musical happenings across the province,
as well as promoting the latest pedagogical materials. This
newsletter (partnered with the Saskatchewan Music Festival Association)
is read in over fifty-one communities in Saskatchewan.
- Inclusion in our directory and our web-site directory as
associate member.
- Your web-site listed on our "link page". ( www.srmta.com
)
- Composers choosing to advertise in our newsletter are encouraged
to send their music to be reviewed in the newsletter.

The Objectives of the Association shall be:
-
TO PROMOTE A HIGH STANDARD OF TEACHING
- to promote the interest of its members by stimulating them through workshops, master classes, and conferences
- to promote progressive ideas and methods in the teaching of music
- to encourage systematic preparation in the art of teaching and to stimulate the acquirement by its members of a high standard of musicianship and general culture.

TO FOSTER AN INTEREST IN THE ORGANIZATION
- to promote a spirit of comradeship and by encouraging members to serve on branch, provincial and national councils where appropriate
- to encourage and foster the formation of local branches composed of members of the Association at suitable centers throughout Saskatchewan
- to speak with one voice on provincial and national issues and always advocate on matters of concern for the professional musician and for the student of music.

TO PROMOTE C0NTINUING EDUCATION BY AND FOR TEACHER.
- to encourage the sharing of ideas that would be useful to members and students by giving workshops or writing pedagogical articles for the Associations’ newsletter.

TO MAINTAIN THE RECOGNITION OF MUSIC AS A CREDIT IN HIGH SCHOOL AND IN POST SECONDARY INSTITUTIONS
- TO PROMOTE AND MAINTAIN THE STATUS OF PROFESSIONAL MUSIC TEACHERS IN THE PROVINCE
- to promote and assist all movements designed to improve the teaching of music and foster the interest of the public in music and for these purposes
- to join with other societies and associations having like aims and objects in furthering these purposes.to promote and maintain the status of professional music teachers in the province by educating the public on the importance of a qualified teacher and by encouraging upgrading and by keeping informed through workshops, periodicals and conferences.
Code of Ethics
The Saskatchewan Teacher will:
- teach to the best of his/her ability
and always promote a positive professional image
- always respect the dignity of the
student and the work of another teacher.
- keep the trust under which confidential
information is exchanged.
- refrain from proselytizing another
teacher’s students by inducement, innuendo, or
insinuation.
- be candid but kind and objective when
advising a student of his/her abilities.
- have fair and honorable business practices
at all times in dealing with students and the Association.
- not misrepresent his/her own professional
standing or advertise in a misleading manner.
