Muzio Clementi: Father of the Pianoforte
Clinician: Laurel Teichroeb Clementi’s fame today rests on the Opus 36 Sonatinas. Every piano student has studied at least one movement! But during his lifetime, Clementi’s reputation was quite different. He was famous throughout Europe as a virtuoso performer and was more popular in his day than his contemporaries Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. He was a composer of music for piano on the cutting edge of musical style. In this powerpoint presentation, you will be taken back to England and journey through Clementi’s life and rich musical legacy. | Sessions in the Oak Room
The Church Musician
Clinicians: Janice Elliott Denike and Valerie Hall Presenters Janice Elliott-Denike & Valerie Hall bring a wealth of background and experience to their respective roles as Directors of Music and Organists at Regina's Anglican and Roman Catholic Cathedrals. Both women have contributed to high standards of music and liturgy throughout their ecclesiastical employment and both appreciate the challenges of limited resources, budgets and time. As fine pedagogues, they also see a role for their students in upholding the musical traditions of the church and ensuring the dignity of the liturgy. In this session, Janice and Valerie will offer resources for choral and keyboard repertoire and speak about making the most of your practice time, training the choir, getting help, working with the clergy and establishing your worth. This will be an informative and frank discussion about our important work as church musicians. A short Question & Answer segment will conclude this useful and interesting talk. |

| The Motivation and Reception of the Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues of Dmitri Shostakovich
Clinician: Dr. Christine Vanderkooy Russian composer Dmitri Shostakovich composed an astonishing number of works under the threat of death. Stalin had imposed a purge in the arts that cleansed music from its “modernist tendencies,” insisting that composers write only music that was reflective of a perceived Soviet reality. By writing in code form, Shostakovich managed to preserve his artistic integrity while satisfying Stalin’s requirements. Composing the Twenty-Four Preludes and Fugues, op. 87 was a more private endeavor for Shostakovich and served as an escape from the artistic constraints imposed on him. Inspired by Bach’s Well-Tempered Clavier, the Preludes and Fugues began as a compositional exercise but quickly evolved into a work of great artistic depth. Having initially been rejected by Stalin’s Union of Composers, the Preludes and Fugues of Shostakovich, opus 87 have only begun to receive significant attention by performers and musicologists. | How to be a Diva: Baroque Ornamentation According to 18th Century Treatises
Clinicians: Barbara Swanson How did Baroque voice teachers approach the craft of teaching singing? Who were some of the most celebrated singers of the era and how did they approach ornamentation? By discussing prominent pedagogues and "divas" of the Baroque -- from Pier Francesco Tosi (ca. 1653–1732) to Faustina Bordoni (1697–1781) -- this workshop will provide concrete examples of Baroque ornamentation and provide tools for ornamenting Baroque repertoire with the confidence and artistry that would have been expected of 18th C singers. Expect a few colourful stories of 18th C singer rivalries and ornamentation showdowns as well. |

Clinician: TBA Description to follow. | Baroque Dance
Clinician: Ann Kipling Brown Come and have fun learning the background information and basic steps required for the dances of the Baroque period. Baroque dance, a precursor of classical ballet, was established and developed in France at the court of Louis XIV (r. 1643–1715) during the Baroque period. At this time, French culture was highly influential in fashionable society and the new style of dancing was no exception. Dances such as the menuet, sarabande, bourée, gavotte, gigue, chaconne and the French courante in general share the same vocabulary of steps, adjusted to fit the duple, triple or compound-duple pulse of each dance type. The step vocabulary was used in both social and theatrical dance and in many instances courtiers danced alongside professionals in court entertainments. In this workshop we will learn some of the basic steps required for the selected dances and background information on the period. |
